The Joy of Secret Service: A Sermon on Saint Nicholas

The life of Saint Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop, demonstrates that true joy is an outflow of service. By giving his wealth away in secret to aid the afflicted, Nicholas embodied the biblical truth: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). His acts of anonymous charity show that when we “pour ourselves out” for others (Isaiah 58:10), we find our own life’s light and gladness rising in return, proving that the most fulfilling life is one of humble, selfless giving.
