The Celestial Sounds of Steelpan

Speaker: Kimani Bishop

Audio Recording:

We’ll explore the historical and ongoing tensions between church ideologies and local musical expressions in Trinidad and Tobago, with a specific focus on the steel pan. We will examine how religious doctrines—particularly within the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Full Gospel Association—have often conflicted with the cultural significance and communal role of steel pan music. Drawing on examples from church practices, theological positions, and testimonies from church leaders, musicians, and congregants, the presentation highlights the colonial history, challenges, and negotiations involved in integrating this national instrument into worship spaces. Ultimately, it offers a critical reflection on how these religious communities have navigated questions of identity, reverence, and cultural authenticity.
