Sarah laughs when she hears that she will bear a son when she is already past child-bearing age. This is not merely a sad tale of women’s value only as mothers of sons, but a lesson in encountering truth. How can we know the truth—about nature, about God, about ourselves, about our families—without faith in a God whose power exceeds what we presently know or accept as truth?
