Money Together

John McLarty

Audio Recording:

Sharing money is one mark of authentic community. Families share in earning and spending. Cities maintain parks and fill potholes in roads and pay their police force using money contributed by the residents. Clubs have dues, because how else can they share the costs of activities? Advocacy groups use the contributions of their members to promote their values and opinions. Church is a little like each of these—a family, a city, a club, and an advocacy organization. Members and friends of the church participate in funding our life together. In fact, authentic membership always includes regular giving. Giving is essential to “real” membership. Until we give, we are welcome guests or children.
