It’s Not Easy Being a Prophet

The ancient Hebrew prophets frequently got into trouble because their words contradicted the conventional religion of their society. More specifically, the prophets insisted that care for the lowly ones in society had a higher moral claim than either religious orthodoxy or social convention. Do right by the “little people!” they demanded. We are heirs of that prophetic calling. We, too, must speak moral truth to power. It probably won’t be easy, but it’s the noble thing to do.
