Mt. Rainier towers 8,000 feet higher than the surrounding South Cascades, which rise a mere 6,000 feet above sea level. Rainier’s glaciers hold a cubic mile of ice. If Rainier awakens and erupts, lahars could wreak staggering devastation. It is a great mountain—tall, massive, magnificent, and potentially lethal. Sometimes we measure God’s greatness by how dangerous we imagine God to be. Jesus offers a radically different measure of the greatness of God: generosity. God sends rain and sunshine on the just and unjust alike. God is watchful and attentive and will supply your needs. We are most like God when we practice grace and mercy. This is the true measure of both divine and human greatness.
