Today, we share together the Lord’s Supper. We drink from tiny cups and taste tiny squares of bread and, in our tasting and in our eating, celebrate the living truth: we are the family of God. We remind ourselves that every drop we drink—especially if it is clean water—and every bit we eat—especially of ordinary food like bread—connects us with the life of all humanity. Like every other person, we are dependent on the gifts of food and drink to sustain our bodies and, in the blessed communion of shared meals, to nourish our lives together. We gather at the Lord’s Table as brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas. Through this eating and drinking together here, we connect with other families around the world, literal and metaphorical families who extend our clan connections to the farthest edges of humanity.
