Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:78-79
Peace is one of the essential fibers comprising the cultural fabric of the City of God. When conflict breaks out, we expect it to be transitory because it is an aberration. Peace is our “normal.” When we discover that one of our traditions is damaging people at the margins, we are sure the tradition will change or disappear. When we grow impatient and imagine solving problems by delegating power to a bully, we remember the messianic mission: to guide our feet into the way of peace. We are ordinary people, capable of the impatience, hunger for revenge, laziness, and violence common to humanity. We are also members of an extraordinary community with ideals as high and luminous as heaven. We are peacemakers, partners with Jesus in guiding feet (the feet of one another in church, the feet of all we touch with our words and influence) into the way of peace.
