Shelly has spent her professional career in education. Most of that has involved music: conducting high school choral ensembles, creating school-wide programs with a focus on musical drama, and developing multi-level handbell programs. Along the way she has taught kindergarten, grades 3 & 4, French, junior high English, and English as a Foreign Language. She also served on the Hymnal Committee for the 1985 Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal.
Shelly earned her BA in Music and French at Atlantic Union College. Her MA at Occidental College focused on Choral Conducting. Elementary Education certification was completed at Cal State LA.
Teaching opportunities have led Shelly and her husband Vance, also an educator, to schools in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Their latest adventure was a move to Asia, working in international schools in Thailand and in the largest English language school in South Korea. Based in Asia, they were able to spend school holidays visiting exotic destinations.
Shelly’s greatest delight comes from involving young people, as well as adults, in inspiring music and drama. In a world where so much emphasis is placed upon academics and test scores, her experience has shown what a significant impact participating in an artistic performance can have on a young person. The thrill of creating with your classmates something more beautiful, more inspiring, than any one alone could have achieved is priceless. These memories never fade.
